Ok, I know that this has been beat into the ground and is old news for some but....
After reading for hours online at different sites about the "A-Trac Hack" I decided to give it a try. I do not have the button yet but wanted to see if it was worth buying so I placed a thick staple into the two wire slots that supposedly activate the A-Trac when you put the truck into 4L. I did this and then started the truck, all is fine at this point. Then I placed it into 4H and drove around, nothing so far, I then put it into neutral and then shifted into 4L and that is when it happened... the A-Trac light came on, so I put it in drive and then drove around in the mud for about three minutes with nothing happening, that sounded strange. The light stayed on, so I stopped at the base of a slightly steep muddy hill (it has rained here for the last two days straight) and switched on the Rear Diff lock. Everything stayed on including the A-Trac. I am unsure if the A-Trac is working as I have no place to test it where I would have two wheels off the ground at the same time to see if it truly works. Has anybody else done this and had it work the way it should? I also want to know if it is ok to just leave the staple (I am going to replace it with some sturdier auto electric wire) in place, as A-Trac only "kicks" on when you shift into 4H right? Would this be safe? Or should I wait until I get the switch. It seems logical that it would be ok to just leave it activated all the time, if I had the button I would just leave it turned on with that. What do the experts think?

Thanks,
Robert

I actually did the same thing when I first tried it, but I used a length of wire to jump the 2 contacts. I used that for quite a while. I then went to the hardware store, and got a rocker switch for $0.99. It's still there. It works great. The hack does work, and it's not very noticable. Your best bet to settle your mind is to go wheeling in 4lo with the locker off, and A-trac off. When you get stuck, put your staple in, or flick the switch you bought, and go again. It's a vibration noise in the brakes you will hear. It pulses the antilock brakes on the wheel that's spinning, and that forces the other wheel to turn. This gives forward motion.
If your light is on, it is working.

I have spent some time in the Toyota Factory Manual and it does appear that the "switch" is the only thing missing in this option. I don't think you'll have a problem with the way you are using it.
