Synthetic oils are the way to go. As an A & P mechanic (aircraft) anything with a turbine/jet engine will use synthetics. As for your mechanic saying once you use synthetic, you can't go back, that is a load of BS. Synthetics will protect much better than regular organic oils and arecompletely compatible with them. Synthetics will stick to the engine components longer and have a much more stable viscoisty. An interesting/neat test is to get 2 small bowls, put about 1/4" of regular oil in one bow and do the same with some synthetic oil then put them in the freezer for a couple of days, you should be able to see the various parts that seperate out (parafins). Try heating them in the oven for about 30 minutes at around 200*, then put them in the freezer to get a great example. On a side note, from personal experience I KNOW synthetics work. I had a girlfriend in 1999 that had a 96 Chrysler Sebring, that had a bad waterpump in it at 44K mile. Anyway, she drove from downtown San Antoino, TX, to past the airport(approx 30 minute drive) with NO WATER in the engine. This was in the end of May, the temps were over 100*+ outside. The previous week I did an oil chang andused synthetic in it. Just past the airport the car decided to stop running (go figure), after towing the car back to the house, and letting it cool, I filled the coolant system back up with water and the car crankd up and ran for a short time. The engine was pretty much cooked, upon teardown, you could see that the heads were REALLY warped. The enginge got hot enough that it melted all the plastic components in the engine compartment ie; timing cover, DISTRIBUTER CAP (it slid down the side ofthe engine about1 inch). After this Thre Mile Island event, when I pulled the plug out of the heads, put a wrench on the flywheel pulley, you could turn the engine over by hand. Short story (I know, already too late), but themost important factor with any oil is to change it at regular intervals. Even with synthetics, I change the oil/filter betwen 3750-4000K miles. The first oil change on a new engine I do about 2500K miles, then run synthetics from then on. The cost difference isn't that much, perhaps $15-20 diffrence in the price of the servicing, but will keep your engine in much better running condition (reduced wear, and increased lubrication) for a much longer time.

What are a few of the better synthetics out there. I am still in my break in period but plan on switching to synthetics when she is broken in. Also, do you think using synthetics will help increase gas mileage at all? Thanks.

not sure about the advice on break-in oils. My porsche came with mobile one from the factory.

Synthetic oil is much better. I use 1 quart Lucis oil treatment and 4 quarts Casterol Syntec 10W30. I had a '96 Z71 with 227,000 miles. I blew a head gasket. I got a friend of mine at a repair shop to fix it. He told me that he had never seen an engine with that many miles that had that little wear.
