Mine had to be replaced before i took delivery, and i went on a toyota academic course to test drive the FJ when they first came out, it had a chip too. YOu're right, the windshields are nearly vertical and do absorb a lot of energy. It was about $1000 to get mine replaced. Apparently they have to replace ALL of the moulding around it too. Even the white cap on the roof.

Did you happen to see it with the molding off? Specifically the white cap on the top? If so, I'm wondering how much room is under it. Any space at all?
