he only thing I am wondering is if the armrest can be replaced with a longer wider one. I am a big guy and can barely rest my are on it.

Im a big guy also and had the same problem with the armrest. Its as if it was made for people with narrow shoulders. Mine did not come with the passenger armrest and my girl complained about it.
The perfect solution is the Tuffy Center Console, it was well worht the $154 I spent. It also locks since the glove box does not it gives you secure storage. I love the way its nice and high and wide.
