As a last resort, you could drill a hole big enough to get a nut through from the back side of the frame. It wouldn't really affect the frame. Just make sure you rust-proof it well. Should also try to rust-proof where the nut broke off. There will now be bare metal there.

I just googled "Nutserts" and came up with this.

you don't have to order them from the UK, go to http://www.mcmaster.com/ and enter "NUT INSERTS". another product is "PEM NUTS" or "PEM INSERTS". you see the grooved ridge on outside of the sleeve? be careful not to over tighten, or else the will spin in place. A better fastener is the one that has a hex instead of the grooves. At any rate, its hard to help without a visual. Can you post some pics?
good luck!

To use those, I'd have to have access to the back side. I might as well just put a nut on there if I did that. What I need is something I can stick through there and then as I tighten it, it expands. Sorta like a metal version of a drywall anchor.

I would post pics, but you wouldn't really see anything. It's just a hole in the bottom of the body. If you look under the side of any FJ, you'll see two holes in the body just behind the drivers door. If you've got step rails, it's where they are mounted. I'll see about getting some pics tonight to post.

OK, you don't have to go to the UK. So I went out to my workshop and took a pix of some toggle bolts.

These 4" x 3/8" bolts need a 7/8" hole drilled. I've used them before and they seem sturdy enough.
