I have seen a few discolor to a yellowish tint/ fuzzy white. but thats after 3 years or so. The second problem is if you ever need to do body work on the hood they are a pain to get off its better to go ahead and replace the whole hood. and if any of material has discolored and you go to put on a new piece you can tell them apart. but it does its job and protects the paint from rock chips.

Really you shouldn't have to be adding anything to protect the paint! it should hold up to normal conditions. I've babied mine so far and its full of paint chips, not just from stones. I have chips all along the edging of my door where a stone could never hit. I am very disappointed in the quality of the paint on my FJ. Its thin and brittle.
In regards to chips around the windshield, I have noticed that I only have chips in the black cherry paint, not on any on the white roof above the windshield. I think that's interesting and probably significant. Anyone else with chips have chips in the white paint?

I agree you shouldn't have to add anything to protect the paint the problem is I have a cabin in Northern Saskatchewan Canada. The highway I travel there is the gateway to the northern part of the province where there are a HUGE number of Mines, the mine supply trucks are prone to throw off rocks and it doesn't matter how good your paint is its going to get messed up, it doesn't help that the highways here are not as smooth and freshly paved as one would like. I feel its cheaper to throw some 3M film on there than to continually paint stone chips on my hood. I ended up going with the full package,

The Front part of the hood, the silver around the grill, the first little part of the fender anything that was painted on the front end basically and the painted parts of the bumper and mirrors. I also did the pillars around the windshield and the the white piece immediately above the windshield. Essentially anything that was exposed to the front was covered up, and its a new generation of the 3M film that is supposed to be more resistant and won't yellow.

This is my solution to the Western Canadian roads. If you guys are interested I will take some pics when I get a chance and show you how it looks.

Let me know
