I'm almost embarrased to say

Honda Element (at least it was black

BTW- streebeck- My wife had a grand prix and it too was great until around 85,000 miles, then it left us stranded in the hoods of Detroit at 1 a.m. and then stranded on a Cleveland highway a few weeks later. I haven't owned a Pontiac since

You know, the whole GM situation is sad: sad for the company, sad for its customers, and definitely sad for America.

I took my first long drive in the FJ this past weekend. The wife and I drove out to Lake Havasu City, AZ to spend time with some friends. I'll tell you, most people (me included) must not have been able to take Monday off because the lake and the town was not busy at all (for those who aren't familiar, Lake Havasu on July 4th weekend is usually like a cross between the movie Animal House and a porno).

Anyhow, on the way home Sunday afternoon, in 112 degree heat, my wife started counting the number of stranded motorists on the side of the highway. There really weren't all that many, but none of the cars stranded were foreign cars. Now, I know that a lot of factors must be considered before developing an opinion about foreign (specifically Japanese) cars versus American cars, but it certainly does look bad. And after owning my FJ, I would not consider purchasing another new American car until they make some serious positive changes. There's just no reason for the Big 3's decline in quality, except that we the consumer keep putting up with it.

I totally feel you on the whole getting stranded in the Pontiac thing... I consider myself lucky now to be a Toyota owner (especially a Cruiser owner), that's for sure!

My Tahoe, with about 70k miles on it, broke down in down town Atlanta at the merger of I-85 and some other Interstate during rush hour traffic and almost 100 degree heat with me, my wife (g/f at the time), her son, her brother, a dog, and 3 sick chinchillas.

Luckily my dad lives in Temple so we had a place to stay for the night. Met a really nice mechanic in the hoods of Atlanta (looked kind of like Mr. T gone Harley...

Was an interesting experience, downtown Atlanta hoods after dark all because of a freaking fuel relay that could not be found at 4 different parts stores. We ended up having to jump the fuel relay until I got home (a few hundred miles away).

I have broken down in several cars but I have never broken down in a foreign car (even my old 85 SR5 4x4 pickup that I used to own with over 300k miles on it never left me stranded).

I traded a 2003 Mini Cooper S in on my Sun Fusion FJ Cruiser. Before the Mini, I had a '97 Range Rover and an '02 Porsche Boxster S. Before that I had a '00 BMW 328Ci, and prior to that a '97 Jeep Wranger Sport. The FJ drives every bit as well as the Range Rover, and has the fun spirit of the Mini Cooper S and the Wrangler, along with Toyota's stunning reliability and resale value. I missed the functionality of the Rover until I got my FJ.
