Is the trd better because it takes air from the same place as the stock is already drawing. I mean better as in less likely to take in water should I be offroading or in snow. Where as a true cold air intake drawing from by the light would be more likely to get wet

TRD IS A COLD AIR INTAKE!!!! It has already been talked about in other discussion. It might be worth doing a search. The TRD is seeled from taking on any heated engine air, and gathers cold air, very rapidly I might ad, from the wheel well. the TRD is the best, there are other intakes that look nicer and have different qualities, but none gather more cold air then the TRD. Unless its custom I might add. The increase in gas economy is noticable but not dramatic, the increase in torque and hp is actually dramatic. By sound alone, you will know that your intake is being fed as much air as it can possibly handle. Its bolt on horse power that takes about an hour to attach. You will not believe the sound, sounds like a hi-performance V8. It does not void any waranty.

I have the Airaid, its not as loud as the TRD but its street legal here in CA because it has a CARB# unlike the TRD. It cost less also.

I checked with me dealer and they told me that my airaid wont void my warranty and the CARB number helps because its legal to use on the street. The reason why the TRD is not legal is because it gets rid of the carbon filter that lets gasses escape out of the intake.

I would think that the TRD might deliver 1-3 more horses by getting a straight shot of air.

From what I read anything TRD makes is legal in all 50 states. I may be wrong. I havent heard anything about the TRD intake being illegal! I have friends with the Air Raid and they just arent happy they want mine. They feel like they waisted their money. Good Luck!

TRD says all of their intakes are 50 state legal but I found other information on the 4.0 engine, I believe its because of the use of the carbon filter.

From Sparks Toyota

p/n PTR05-35061
Cold Air Intake

For the 4.0 Ltr Engine
Note: For off-highway use only, the part is not emissions or CARB approved. This part is sold with no warranty.

From TRD Source
Note: This part is sold with no warranty and installation of this part may adversely affect the warranty coverage of the vehicle.Part Number PTR05-35061

Even with the above I think its still a good product and think it sounds better than what I have. I might switch to it after my warranty runs out since I wont have to smog for some time. Whichever system you get
