Greetings from Winnipeg, Canada
I just joined the website. I have a question and I am hoping somebody has an answer for me. I own a basic(offroad) FJ with a basic CD player.
Do you guys knwo if I can add 2 more speakers behind the back door where loaded models have two speakers close to the roof? I mean do you know if there is any built in wiring for this purpose? can CD player handle it?
Regards, Fred

Welcome, from Victoria BC.
Yes, you can add speakers on the rear pillars. The wiring is there, and is already hooked up to the stereo. Just plug and play! There are also speaker wires where the US stock sub sits. You can add your own sub to those wires, but you will need to add an amplifier for that.

I'm getting conflicting information regarding adding speakers to the rear pillars of my FJ. I also have the basic radio/single CD and six speakers. The previous message stated that, with my setup, the speaker plugs/wires in the rear pillars are hot and one can simply plug in two addtional speakers. However, two local auto stereo shops tell me that, if you have the basic setup, the rear pillar wires are not hot - they are not even connected to the radio. In addition, they state my radio isn't powerful enough to drive the additional speakers by itself - you have to add an amplifier and a special hookup to the radio
So what is right? Can you simply connect two additional speakers, or not?
Thanks, folks!

Keep in mind, the shop is telling you stuff that will make them more money.
I must admit, I think most people that have done this, have the upgraded stereo. I also have the base stereo, but have not looked into the rear speakers. I have, however, added 2 10" subs to the existing subwoofer wiring that is in the rear. I added a couple amplifiers for that, though. I find it hard to believe that the Canadian model (which is not available with the subwoofer on any models) has the sub wiring connected, but would not have the rear speaker wiring connected.
If I get time today, I might be able to check mine.....

I have the basic with CD and 6 speakers. I bought $225 worth of components (Sony amp, two mid-range speakers, and a 10-inch sub) and build a wood enclosure. Biggest problem was hooking up to a power source with enough oomph. Sony manual says 50 amps, but I used the rear-window defroster wiring temporarily because it was easy to hook up in the rear. Now I can't use the defroster, but on a vehicle like this with near-vertical windows that isn't a big deal. The defroster is set up with a 30-amp breaker and that has been plenty. I hooked the speaker wires that are in the back for the subwoofer into the amp, and the whole thing sounds great. Only issue is the defroster shuts off automatically after about 15 minutes. Eventually I will wire up a separate power source.
