I test drove both, and I don't really favor either auto or manual tranny, they both have their advantages and dis-advantages, but it seemed like I was always shifting the six speed in the manual, and I felt like it distracted me from driving, something about the shifter location just didn't fit me. The full time 4wd also got less mileage and more wear on the drivetrain than the 2wd, and if you had to replace a flat tire with a new one the drivetrain wouldn't like it with 4wd. Also I just figured that it would be safer in the long run for our family. Other than the stock tires that may not do well in the winter, my wife and I love ours more everyday.

Just a FYI... both the auto and the manual will have the same wear and tear on the drivetrain. The auto, even when it's in part-time, still has the same stuff spinning. There's just no power being applied.

Here in Canada full time four wheel drive is the way to go. So that means I had to buy the 6 speed (it is also a lot more fun to drive). During the winter the roads are always a combination of wet, dry, ice and snow. Using part time four wheel drive means you should not lock the transfer case on dry roads because of possible damage to the drive train. But driving in 2 wheel drive is no good because in a couple of kilometers the roads could change to snow. I had this problem with my Tacoma 4X4. I'm glad I got the FJ.

And personally i think you have a better feel for the road with a manual as opposed to an automatic.
