Here's what I found out yesterday, regarding my wish to add speakers to the rear pillars of my FJ, which is equipped with the basic radio/single CD:
The speaker wires in the rear pillars are hot. The local stereo shop hooked up a speaker to them and it worked (i.e., sound came out). However, there may still be a problem. The stereo shop tech believes that the pillar wires and the speakers in the headliner are on the same radio circuit and the radio may not be powerful to handle two sets of speakers on the same circuit. He is going to call Toyota for me and find out if the radio can adequately power the pillar speakers from the same circuit as the headliner speakers (without hooking up an additional amplifier)or not.
I'll get back to you all when I find out.

I just installed(4) JL Audio TR350CXi's front and rear and the difference is incredible.I have the upgrade 6-disc changer, and it handled them with no problem.Next,I'll see how it does with matching 6x9's.I think matching sub will require more power.

They will tell you that you need an amplifier. How else will they make money? Of course it will sound better/go louder if it's powered by an amplifier. If you just want more sound fill, just hook up a pair of speakers. If it's not what you like, add an amplifier later. Easy.

As you probably have figured out by now, I know nothing about car stereos. Will it hurt my basic radio/single CD to just hook up two additional speakers on the rear pillars?
A previous post stated that the stereo dealer will tell me I need to buy an amplifer because that's how he makes money. You may be right. We'll see. I'll get back to you.
Thanks!

I think I have an answer regarding if I can hook up pillar rear pillar speakers in my FJ with the basic radio/single CD player.
I went back to the audio shop today and the manager said that I can hook up rear pillar speakers to my basic radio/single CD setup and it should work fine. He himself owns an FJ and he knew quite a bit about the various audio options that come with them, so I trust his information.
He didn't try to sell me an amplifier - never even mentioned one.
Thanks!
