Yes! Actually, that seems like a great solution for a road trip. I was thinking about off road - the hitch rack ruins the departure angle. Otherwise, great.

Yes, my mistake not to say!

I do have the standard roof rack. In hind sight, I think I would've preferred one of the aftermarket versions. Anyway ...

My self-made rack has a great departure angle. It also keeps the center of gravity lower.

Well, this one was made out of leftover scrap steel I had from other projects. It's basically just slapped together. I'll be making another one in a few weeks, but using the same basic design. It just fits into the reciever hitch. It wiggles a little bit, but not that much. I have recently started using a strap on one side to keep it tight. Here's a pic of it on my other truck. Sorry, I don't have any better pics of the whole thing.
