Is it really necessary to run Premium fuel at every fill up?

I just got back from a road trip up the coast of California, Oregon, and Washington. I travelled over 2540 miles, I used regular fuel and averaged 22.4 mpg I usually use mid-grade fuel but the mpg never changes...

After reading many posts and closely monitering my own fillups with octanes from 87 to 93, I've discovered I get my best mileage with the higher octane fuels. It's not a night/day diffrence but I like getting a steady 20+mpg. This mileage obtained with mostly onroad highway driving.
