I've been reading a lot on this, the best source is at the fjcruiserforum, the direct link: http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/problems-dealer-service/33440-engine-bay-body-rips.html there are 219 pages discussing this. But from the moderators post (follow the link in the previous reply), it apparently is not that big of a deal.

So to shorten my question:

Should I not buy an FJ because of this?
Is this a serious problem (terms of safety, integrity, and neccesity plus cost to repair)?

Thank you!

I'm sorry to re-reply, but I may be throwing terms around, but I'm pretty sure that I saw on about.com or something like that.. let me link it... http://www.hummerforums.com/m_85314/mpage_5/tm.htm about half way down someone else says the same thing. I must have misread it. Everyone is saying it's the fender and not the frame.

I'm not all that car savvy. I'm working on that... so, it being just a fender it's more of a cosmetic issue than a serious mechanical problem?

HUMMERFORUMS????????????

What? If I wanted a Hummer I would have called your (fill in the blank)

Just Kidding, really it is good to be informed of a vehicle that you are going to purchase. It is the inner fender panels in the engine bay. But I think I have read somewhere about Toyota addressing the issue. I have not heard about it happening on the newer (built in 07-08) FJCs.

lol, I found that article by googling "fj frame cracking." Honestly, I'm not in love with Hummers. I like some of the more luxurious interior features, but I've driven Hummer's, and I hate the way they ride, and I really hate their windows. People complain about the C-Pillar in the FJ, holy crap, you can't see any sedans in a Hummer.

Plus I'm doing green (ecofriendly) architecture. Objectively speaking, an FJ is not much better with emissions nor gas mileage than an H3, but it's the Hummer name that pisses whacko tree huggers off. That's right. I make fun of them too.

But honestly, FJs drive so much nicer than Hummers. My opinion only I know...

Anywho - Back on topic, The terms frame and fender were quite interchanged on the forums. From what I understand it's nothing to worry about. I've seen some people using support brackets and such. I imagine Toyota will produce some real ones soon. Ones that fit more snug.

There are no other cars accessible in the US that I would want. I'm thinking either black or yellow. If I go yellow I'm going to put a rear window vinyl on that says "Shortbus." It would make me smile

I have a 2007 07 model and have the bulge on the passenger side of the engine bay.

It was picked up by the Toyota technician after I took the truck in because it had been damaged in a car park causing slight damage to one panel and the bumper (bar stewards drove off as well).

Anyway, the technician said it was calused by the car being hit and that it was a minor issue (not a structural one) and that it would be repaired along with the other works (bumper and panel).

Will keep you all posted
