You can put the Thule 450 attachments and cross bars on the stock rack. Check them out on the Thule Internet site.

geoff - Are you going 'rackless' or did you switch to another rack?

I don't know what I am going to do yet. My goal is to get my rooftop tent on top of the FJ:

The rack will have to be stronger than the stock rack. One thought would be to get the upcoming ARB rack attachments and make some cross bars (just work with the attachments and leave off the ARB basket).

I also thought about getting a Hannibal rack and rooftop tent:

I'm not sure if there is a Hannibal rack for the FJ, but I got the impression from those guys that it's in the works. Their racks and tents would add a lot of weight... maybe too much weight and throwing off my CG... but it would be nice to have some room on top for other stuff.

This is the roof rack I put on my FJ. They also have a add on for the stock rack to add more storage and put a canoe or whatever on top. http://www.central4wd.com/category.aspx?page=id%7C42839

When I first tried to move the cross members around I was also stumped with the apparent shortness of the rear cross members. I first tried the cross member closest to the front and found it about 2" too short. Just because I was having so much fun (trying to get a kayak home from the store) I tried the one farthest to the rear and low and behold it fit. It was a tight fit but it did work so play around with the cross members and you may find the same thing. Why they are not all the same length is a good question to put to toyota.
