I'm seriously considering the swith to Amsoil Synthetic motor oil. I now have a little over 4,000 miles on my FJ so there should not be a problem in terms of the engine being broken in.

I found a lot of good info on this site and Amsoil seems to be the best out there.

Now here is my dilemma.....just spoke with the dealer and they tell me that I still need to change the oil at there recommended intervals...every 5,000. If I don't do that and a problem arises my warranty could be voided.

Any suggestions?

It is not going to hurt to change your oil more frequently

One of the many reasons to switch to sythetic is the extended drain intervals. The Amsoil is good for 25,000 miles.

That's why you are paying over $7 a quart for this product.

It just seems silly that a dealer would try and discourage you from using a superior product.

That's a good point. Also, I was wondering if the maintanance actually has to be done by Toyota to keep your warrentee up to date. I do all my own stuff, and hate taking my vehicle to the dealer.

If I am not mistaken, the burden of proof should fall on the dealer shoudl a warranty issue arise.
While I am not an attorney, I believe they have to prove you did/didn't do something to an extent it would be damaging.
