Do you have any pics of how your rack looks after the mod. Also, is it a toyota rack or an after market rack?

Thanks,
fatback

Yes, it's a modified stock rack.

It does not appear to have any cross bars on it, how do you load items on the rack? I would not want to put them on the roof directly? Also, nice exit from the watery mud! I like the rack on the back as well, is that mounted on the tire? If so, how much weight can the rear door mount handle?
Thanks for the pics,

That looks pretty good! Did this mod require any cutting or welding? How did you cover the attachment points for the top rail that are on the bottom rail? Or did you remove the bottom rail and move the top rail to the position of the bottom rail?

I bought the rack used for 75 bux. It didn't come with cross bars. The stock rack isn't really usable, anyways. I just think it looks a bit funny with nothing on the top, and I didn't like the look of the full rack. There are very small holes where the top part of the rack would attach to the bottom part. You wouldn't even know they were there unless you were really looking for them. Even then, it would be hard to spot them.

The rack on the back was built by me. I welded it up with some scrap steel left over from other projects. It mounts into the receiver hitch. I can sit on top of it when it's fully loaded, so I'd guess that's about 270 lbs. That's 100 lbs of water, fuel, and beer, and 170 lbs of me.

As for the back tire mount weight...
I made an adapter out of 1/4" steel to fit my 37" tire on there. It weighs about 150 lbs or so. Seems to be doing fine.

Oh, and no cutting or welding of the rack. There is an "H" connector at the back center that either needs to be modified, or what I did was found a section of aluminum that juuust fits over top. I sleeved it and hit it with some black paint.

The stock rack looks like a bad hairdo to me, but I like the looks of this. I was planning to completely remove mine this weekend, but now I may set it up like yours. I'd still be able to use the crossbars on it, too, if I need the roof rack functionality.

I'll bet you can find some little plastic hole plugs to seal those top holes and keep the water and other crap out.

Thanks for the great idea!
