Has anyone figured a way to move the racks's front bar forward? I tried and the oval bar stock isnt long enough. It would be great at the front for tying down long lumber and such. How about a source for the bar stock? Could you make it by pounding down some pipe?

I've got 10' of pipe and I'm not pounding one inch of it!
How about considering either the Roof Rack Light Bar (Part #PT278-35071-LB ) or Cross Bar, Long (Replacement Long Cross Bar for roof rack) #PT278-35061-CB. You can check this list for a Toyota parts shop near you.

what I've done with other vehicles, for putting up drywall sheets or long lunber on the roof rack is this. Cut a 2x4 as long as you need it for the cross member, then drop a U bolt through the 2x4 that fastens it to your roof rack. now you can lay whatever you want up there, and take it off when you're done. You'll have about 6 bucks in the whole set up. If you can't or don't want to buy 4$ for the U bolts you could use Zip ties to secure the 2x4........

Interesting workaround fanatic...
But I still think Toyota's designers missed the "function" part of the roof rack and went for the "form". It erks me as much as the back door opening right-to-left, instead of left-to-right.
