Anybody know of an aftermarket T-adapter that plugs into the stock wiring ? I bought one of these for my Jeep at Wally-world a few years back. Got an FJ this month, got the hitch put on as part of the deal, but told them I'd do the wiring. So far I have not found an adapter made specifically for the FJ. Maybe one that's made for another Toyota truck would work. Anyone know ? I only need the 4-flat connector. Otherwise I'll need to buy a universal adapter and do some splicing...

I went to the local U-Haul store and got a universal adapter. Guess I'll do some splicing...

Imports are usually a bit more difficult to do home-made trailer wiring for, because they have seperate lights for brake and turn signals. A trailer (and Jeeps) only have one bulb to do the same job. There is a box available at many parts stores that can solve this. Also, there is a wiring harness available from the dealer that plugs into an existing harness at the back of the truck. It's a much cleaner, and safer way of doing it.

I should have let the dealer do the wiring, but I wasn't so sure I wanted the connector mounted under the truck. Here in Buffalo they use so much salt that the thing wouldn't be likely to last more than a winter or two. I like to have the wiring tucked inside the back door of the vehicle 'cuz I don't trailer too often. When I do, I can just let the wire hang out the back door. I did it the same way with the Jeep, and never had to replace the connector.
I did notice that under the back end of the truck there's a connector hanging there that goes nowhere - I bet that's the hookup you were talking about for the trailer lights...

The Factory Wiring Kit is your best bet if you don't want to do splicing. It's expensive but you will have the original equipment piece that should be warrantied if anything happens.
