If you go bigger tires, you need axle ratios to match. The manual transmission has 3:90's in the axles. I'm going with 4:56's with the 37's. I actually plan to downgrade to 35's, so this should be perfect. If you have the auto, you'd have to change your carrier, as there is a carrier break. To get lower gears for an auto, you'd have to get the manual carrier, or upgrade to a Detroit, or similar carrier.
I got to say that lifted trucks look great but , in the sand where I do most my wheeling, the big trucks just cant hang. I wheel beat any lifted truck with big tires that is making 320 hp or less, with my stock vehicles. I do like the look of lifted trucks though. 2008 FJ w/all the fixens "There is NO need to lift"

I have been in sand, snow, mud, dirt and rock and would like the added piece of mind that comes with lifting the vehicle. I wince every time something hits the underside of my FJC. Lifting it 3-6" would provide the extra clearance and piece of mind. Fatback

On some of the side hills Ive done on the sand I wouldnt want to be in a lifted truck.. Have you seen the pros drive these. I have yet to see a lifted FJ tackle the terain that the test drivers treverse with a stock truck. It is all about the driving. I do think that leveling out the front end helps get the skid plate up. Then again if you tow with a level truck, now your lights are in the sky. I have yet to hear a good reason to lift besides how nice it makes your truck look. Clearance actually comes from tire size. So you have to lift to get the big tires. Now your geomatry is off. Idealy it would be nice to add large tires without lifting. We all know that cant be done easily. Then again take the monster trucks, they prove my whole theory to be wrong.
I still havent seen any video of lifted FJs doing anything more then the original test drivers! 2008 FJ w/all the fixens "There is NO need to lift"

Lifting a truck does not change undercariage height. Bigger tires do. To get "3 of whole truck lift you will need to get a "6 bigger tire. 2008 FJ w/all the fixens "There is NO need to lift"

With a 3" suspension lift, you raise the whole vehicle (undercarriage and all) except the axles. The only thing that isn't raised by a lift is the axles. Tires are the only thing that will raise the axles off the ground. That may be true, but where I wheel, there is no sand or mud, really. Just lots of trees and rocks. You HAVE to have a lift to clear these things. waterlad112002 wrote: Mind if i ask why you are thinking about down grading to 35's? I thought you just got those brand new 37's from BF Goodrich for that magazine article. Yes, I did get them brand new, but I wanted 35's. These happened to be 37's, so I jumped on the deal. They will probably end up on my Suzuki project after I get some 35's for the Cruiser. 37's are a tad too large for a daily driver for me. I have other trucks with the big rubber to satisfy me.

Here's some vid clips of my truck with 3" lift and 33" tires. Ya, it gets kinda tippy sometimes, but you just have to know your truck. It will actually lean over a LOT more before rolling than you think it will. Besides, when you lift a truck and put bigger tires on, you generally make it wider at the same time.
