I have been off roading my FJ like mad. When I am on the sand I have been leaving my diff locked in and red lining in 1st 2nd and 3rd often. I recently read in the owners manual, not to drive above 5mph with it locked. Didnt seem to hurt in snow and sand. Have I done bad? It sure works nice to run around in the sand and snow with the diff locked. What do you guys say? 2008 FJ w/all the fixens "There is NO need to lift"

There's no problem with using the rear locker over 5mph. The problem is some different drving characteristics on the street or hard surface at speeds. The truck will tend to slightly understeer. Nothing major. There is no mechanical reason to limit your speed with the locker.:
Oh, and I disagree with your "no need to lift" motto. My motto is to fit the biggest tire with the least amount of lift. But some lift is necessary.

I figure this much. They dont want you spinning out or pushing through a turn. Thanks man. About the lifting, I am just worried that by lifting and adding bigger tires It will change the geomatry, torque ratio and get way worse gas mileage. I am already spanking everyone around me in the sand and snow. How has lifting help your vehicle? I am not knowlegable on this. Ive always kept my Scouts stock heigth too. You don see stadium or dessert trucks lifted, the are squated down wit great inner wheel well clearance. 2008 FJ w/all the fixens "There is NO need to lift"

Any modification needs to be thought out. If you lift to fit bigger tires, you also need to think about the gear ratios in your axles. If you go bigger tires, you need axle ratios to match. The manual transmission has 3:90's in the axles. I'm going with 4:56's with the 37's. I actually plan to downgrade to 35's, so this should be perfect. If you have the auto, you'd have to change your carrier, as there is a carrier break. To get lower gears for an auto, you'd have to get the manual carrier, or upgrade to a Detroit, or similar carrier.

Mind if i ask why you are thinking about down grading to 35's? I thought you just got those brand new 37's from BF Goodrich for that magazine article.
