Is it normal for the 4x4 shifter to vibrate when not in use?
I would say the vibration level severity is a 6 out of 10.
I don't remember if my Jeep Wrangler did that or not, so I have no point of reference.

I have a M/T and the gear shift and t-case shifter both vibrate a bit, but not noticeably moreso than any other M/T rig I owned.

MY 4X4 shifter vibrated (so to speak) in my '02 Tacoma as well. I don't think it's an issue. ALso, I used to shift in to 4 wheel drive once or twice a month on dry surfaces if I hadn't taken it out on the trails in order to keep things lubed up. Never had a problem but tighter turns did tend to jerk the truck around a bit. I wouldn't think shifting the FJ into 4 wheel drive for the same reason as long as it's on a straight away would be an issue.

It's normal for it to vibrate. It is still attached to the top of the transfercase, so it will get driveline vibrations regardless if it is in use or not.
Kind of along the same lines...I noticed the manual transmission shifter REALLY moves around when flying down the logging roads. I've owned and abused many 4x4's most of them quite old and worn, and none of them move as much as this shifter. I'm sure it's not a problem, but it is kinda annoying.
