New 2010 FJ auto trans: L4 to N to H4 (auto trans in N) 90% of the time the gears are spinning very fast and grind 'big time' going in.
10% of the time all works smooth.
What I do to avoid damage is turn the engine off / make the shift / restart the engine.
Went back to the dealer had it checked out all ok. Dealer did state some grind is normal. What I'm facing is way above normal.
All other shifting is ok H2 to H4 to N

I have an '08 and mine doesn't grind when I shift gears. I only shift when at a complete stop and L4 to N to H4 shifts smoothly. I use H4 when I'm up in the snow... Good luck
