Well, for me, I prefer to modify it the way I want it. I get to choose the tires. I get to choose the shocks, etc. It's cheaper for me to do it that way, and I get what I want. Not what some guy behind a desk thinks I want.

I bought an '07 FJ here in Daytona Beach for under 27,500 with my trade-in...a very much used albeit clean '91 Chevy S-10 Tahoe Blazer 4.3.
I miss the Chevy but I love the ride and room of the FJ. It's a very clever, simple vehicle and I got the 6-SP with a quick shifter (Don't buy from URD Products; cheap spinoff of TRD Factory) and the shifts are now snickety-snick, no miss, no foul.
There are plenty of aftermarket specialty shops on your coast. I envy the fact that you are closer to them all than I am. We are just now getting our first 4WD Offroad shop in Ormond Beach.
As for your concerns in finding the right FJ, unfortunately your more "Liberal" California constituency probably did their level best to keep the manually-driven FJ trannys out of their Californicated car lots. No surprise as the automatic model claims a 2mpg better gas average.
You go figure. I'd take a ride up to Tacoma and find the right one at the right price.
Don't let those tree-huggers spoil your day in CA. Better yet, move to Florida!
