Looks like the two bolts that hold the lower ball joint weren't torqued down, and fell out. Probably an honest mistake by the mechanic. But it shouldn't have happened.

Thanks for posting the pics.
I doubt that I will be buying a new FJ...mostly due to my wife's small size...she could barely see out of the thing. I'm 6-5, so no problem.
If I bought a new one, I would definitely want 4WD. When we bought ours, I raised the question, "why would anybody buy such a vehicle with 2WD?". I know most of us never go offroad, but really....that's what this machine is meant for...so why buy a castrated version of it?
