full time 4wd vs. part time 4wd - opinions?

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a new FJ. I was leaning towards the Automatic because of the slightly higher mileage and convienience. But I noticed the manual tranny has full time 4wd.

Use -
most on road bad weather - not many rocks and dry creek beds to drive around inhere in Illinois just south of Chicago. I plan to get off road, but it'll likely be more flat/hilly terrain, hunting, camping, and fishing.

I had a Subaru with a part time system and the thing was near unstoppable, but I had to monitor the conditions to use it effectively.

I'll give you a real world example - the street is wet but not icy, the driveway had 8" of snow in it - with a part time system I can't engage the system until I drive into the driveway in rwd. With a full time system it seems that you get more real use from it because it's engaged all the time.

So my questions for you knowledgeable folks - what did you choose and why? In my sample use scenario identified - which would you choose?

Thanks for your input!

I got the 6 speed manual. Not because of the full time 4wd, but because I hate autos. The full time 4wd is nice in some situations, but I wish I had the option of a part-time transfercase.
It just depends on what you will use it for most. If you have a lot of wet/slippery roads, the full-time 4wd would be good. If you never plan to use the 4wd, the auto would be a good idea.

Ontario canada is a hell storm of snow and Ice I got the full time manual because i wanted manual and I wanted 4 wheel I had a 99 2w/d dakota before in manual and it sucked in anything that wasn't ashfault. I get better highway milage than my v6 3.9 dakota but in town is worse. there are benifits and drawbacks. but manual is so much more FUN!!!!!

I hear that! I have the 6 speed manual and it is a blast to drive! Plus knowing you have the full time 4WD to back you up when needed is nice!

I have the auto, I selected that because the majority of my drive time is in the city with stop and stop traffic. I like the auto because of the added fuel mileage as well as the fact that you can still shift into 4hi while driving up to 45 mph and you can engage the rear diff at anytime as well. The only thing is that you have to stop and put it into neutral before shifting into 4low. I have not had to use 4 low often. I have had to use 4hi a lot as of late due to the snow we have been getting in Indiana and it is nice to be able to switch from 4hi to 2 wheel and back as road conditions warrant. I would go with the auto but the only thing I can say is to drive both with the same options and then decide for yourself. I drove both for about four hours each on different days before I made my final decision. Also, I have had manual trucks in the past, I know how to drive them so that is not a reason I did not choose one for my FJC.

Well for what it's worth, those are my two cents
