I tried that. It opened a window; I double clicked on the .JPG, then tried selecting it and hitting Open... Nothing ever appeared in the box next to Browse, and nothin appeared in the message. When I type in the box next to Browse, the cursor advances but nothing appears. I even tried typing in the entire tag-filename-tag thing in the text box, several different ways, and still no luck. Any suggestions?

Whoa! How the frick did I do that?! Well, here goes...
The cross-bar itself is a leftover Thule bar from a previous rack. You can buy them here. The factory rack width at this point is 42.5 inches.
I used stainless hardware (except the U-bolts).
I poured the highly toxic rubberizer into a larger container to dip the U-bolts, which I put 2 coats on.
It's not rip-off-proof, but neither is the factory rack. Use your common sense there.
Every other rack option I found for bikes, snowboards and/or kayaks either didn't adapt to the bare FJ roof, or cost a few hundred more on top of the FJ factory rack. This cost me less than $100 after I got my $599 factory rack. Other options also added 6-12 inches of height BEFORE the bike or whatever went on. My solution keeps it as low as possible, especially with the rear bike tire sitting down inside the rear portion of the factory rack. Just tie it down to one of the factory cross-bars with a spare toe strap. I hope this helps solve some problems.
Hot dang, I did it!

Crap! The picture that really shows it didn't make it. Let's try again.

Apparently I'm better at making racks and shifter knobs than web posts.

Let me tell you that you've done a great job at both. Thanks for the insight into modding your rack.
