I have a Automatic w/ 6" lift and 35" tires i am thinking that i should re-gear for my next mod. The only thing is i dont know much at all when it comes to Gearing, diffs and all that. All pro has the 4.56 gears for the FJ would that be good for my setup i use the FJ as a daily driver and weekend wheeler, would these gears change the divability of around town and highway driving, would i get better or worse MPG? Do i need to re-gear both front and rear diffs or am i able to just do the rear?

please post your 2cents on this subject i would like to know what everyone thinks and knows about gearing.

thanks

You will need to re-gear both front and back. The 4:56 ratio is quite a jump from your stock 3:73's that you have now. (I think) The manual trucks have 3:90's. This would be a better ratio, but I'd say 4:10's would be your best bet. Unless you plan to go bigger. The 4:56s would be great for wheeling, but your highway speed would suffer. I'm pretty sure All pro has 4:10's as well. Right now, it's a fairly expensive change, as not many manufacturers are making new ring and pinions for our trucks. If you can wait a while (could be more than a year) you might be able to get other ratios from other manufacturers for cheaper.

I'd go for the 4.56 if you're gonna change them, that will help the V6 to pull hills and the added weight of tires and add-ons, but don't expect to get great gas mileage, it's not a prius.

I don't know for sure that other companies will come out with their own ring and pinions, but it would make sense.

The rear can be had for fairly cheap. It's very similar to all the Toyota 8" ring gears out there. All the way back to the '80's 4x4 pickups and such. It's the front that's different. They went with a mid-pinion design. It's fairly new.
