I'm personaly waiting for the "TRD" version to come out. I've spoken to them and they are suppost to come out with one by the end of '07. Plus, the "TRD" version doesn't kill your factory warranty.

If it's speed you want, you got the wrong vehicle. To make a hot rod FJ, you'll need to play with the gearing in the diffs, and find a new trany. FJs are geared specifically for 4-wheeling. Notice that when you floor it (my 4x4 automatic anyway) from a stop on a straight-away, 1st jerks you hard and doesn't take you far before it shifts; 2nd jerks you a bit too and wants to shift right away; 3rd gets you going okay but only to about 60mph; then 4th and so on. That's called "lots of torque" and "tight gearing" for the trail or rocks. That's what a good 4x4 has. My Ferarri, on the other hand (yeah, right!) might get me to 40mph in first, 70mph in second, 110 in third, you get the picture. That's because hot rods have loads of horsepower and lower torque. If you recall, the very first 4x4s (military jeeps) had little 4-cylinder engines and super low gears... that's all they needed. Big horsepower off-road breaks things. If you want a hot rod SUV, the FJ ain't it. Try something made in America, like a Dodge... our manufacturers still haven't figured it out yet. Just be ready to take it to the shop about once a month.
Man, I love my Toyota!

In fact, my friend has an '05 Tacoma with the same engine I have. On a few occasions, we've left work late, and at the same time and "raced" on the long, straight road leading to the highway. Now granted, my FJ is about 500 lbs heavier than his Taco, but he spanks me every time, especially in the low end. So does another friend I work with who just got a brand new '07 4Runner with the 4.0 liter 6-cyl. It's gearing, man. The FJ's geared for 4-wheeling and for getting you down the road in comfort... but NOT, however, like a rocket. If you want to speed up your FJ, the first thing to do is replace the ring gears (373s from the factory) with something smaller, but you'll give up a little off-road prowess by doing so. Then, find a parts yard with a Tacoma or 4Runner tranny and swap it out, which will also reduce your off-road prowess. Heck, if money's no issue, pick up a Tundra V8 while your at the parts yard and stuff that in there! You'll have the fastest FJ around, and probably the first one to break something off-road! Have fun!

I agree with the others, if you want speed, you should go with something lighter with higher gearing. I also agree you should be careful about going aftermarket in respect to the vehicle warranty. I would definitely do some homework studying what you can and cannot do there.
