My intent is not to 'flame' you, but since this is a forum, I would like to comment about pride of the workers in Mexico. Having traveled to Mexico several times over the last few years for business, I can say that Mexican workers, working for major public companies are extremely proud of the work they do and are very conscientious. Reason for this is Mexico is like two countries in one...The poor one you see in the movies and other stereotypes..straight out of the 30's and then there is modern Mexico which is as current and productive as any economy in the world. To be employed on a regular basis with benefits is a BIG deal to a Mexican worker. A MX worker for a US based company gets benefits similar to those of US workers PLUS a major mid-day meal
(dinner) is provided (they take their main meals at mid-day)by the company as a benefit. Uniforms are provided by the employers and this is a REALLY BIG deal in MX, as it identifies someone as being regularly employed and part of some organization...kinda like wearing a sign that says I'm part of the working MIDDLE class. Belonging to an org. is a big point of pride for them. Much of the other labor in Mexico is of a casual nature or piece-work, so by virtue of that, the quality issue shows up when casual labor is used. Casual workers are not well trained, compensated, experienced, etc. I don't know of any major US employers that use casual labor for manufacturing, so the inferior products you have observed are probably comming from companies that are not too concerned with quality and employ a casual work force. I think you would really be suprised to see how many US companies have facilities in MX. I know I was. In a drive down the hiway from the airport in Monterrey to my companies plant, I counted at least 50 US company logos on the buildings. As for suspect quality, would you consider water cooled VWs to be inferior to most other cars in assembly quality? They have been built in the Puebla plant for the last 25 years or so, since VW pulled out of PA and moved manufacturing to MX. Go and check out a current Chevy/GMC P/U..they are built in Silao MX with 90% US parts. I guess my point is businesses that are well run can produce excellent products wherever they choose and those that are not, will not. Worker quality & pride depends upon the culture of the organization and not the nationality. My reason for my responses are that I don't like to see nationalities blasted generically, when it is not universally true and based upon sterotypes. I'm off my soap box and done with this thread.

My intent was not to say that Mexican workers are not proud of their work. The intent was that they are not known for the pride and quality of the work by the rest of the world.

I'll be happy just as long as they aren't made in Mexico...

You and me both

I had a 2000 Turbo Beetle, they are made in Mexico, talk about the lowest quality, least dependable car I have ever owned/driven/encountered! It isn't just the New Beetles, I have friends thathad Jetta's and Passat's 9 those aren't made in Mexico though). It always had some mechanical problem of some sort, and the car was religiously maintained too. I and many friends will never own another VW product again! As someoen else stated, I too took pride that the FJ is 100% Japanese. This isn't meant as a derogatory comment or the like, just that some countries are know for their various expertise, and again as someone else pointed out, Mexico, is not know for precision electronics, or engineering (apart form the cool Aztec/Maya/Olmec temples)

They will probably be made in the new plant that will open in 2008 in Woodstock ON Canada where all of the RAV4s will be built for North America.
